The main difference is the part of the digestive tract being examined. A colonoscopy evaluates the large intestine (colon) and is commonly used for colorectal cancer screening, polyp detection, and investigation of lower gastrointestinal symptoms. An upper endoscopy (EGD) examines the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine to help diagnose conditions such as GERD, peptic ulcers, Barrett’s esophagus, and other upper digestive disorders. Your physician will determine which procedure is appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history, and clinical needs.
If you experience frequent heartburn, regurgitation, or upper abdominal discomfort — particularly after meals or when lying down — you may benefit from a GI evaluation. GERD is a common and manageable condition. A clinical consultation with one of our gastroenterologists is the appropriate first step toward an accurate diagnosis.
